Russian Missile Strikes Kharkiv, Ukrainian Forces Repel Invasion
Kharkiv Under Siege
In the early days of the invasion of Ukraine, the eastern city of Kharkiv came under heavy bombardment from Russian forces. Like an enormous scalpel out of a surreal horror movie, a Russian missile sliced off an entire section of a residential building, killing at least 10 people and injuring dozens more.
Ukrainian Resistance
Despite the relentless attacks, Ukrainian forces have put up a staunch resistance in Kharkiv. Street fighting has been intense, with both sides suffering heavy casualties. Ukrainian troops have managed to repel several Russian advances and retake control of some areas of the city.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has praised the bravery of the defenders of Kharkiv, calling them "heroes" and vowing that Ukraine will never surrender.
International Condemnation
The Russian attacks on Kharkiv have drawn widespread condemnation from the international community. The United Nations has called for an immediate ceasefire and the protection of civilians. The United States and other Western countries have imposed sanctions on Russia in response to its aggression.
The Russian government has denied targeting civilians and has claimed that its actions are necessary to protect the Russian-speaking population of eastern Ukraine. However, evidence on the ground suggests that Russian forces have been indiscriminately shelling residential areas.
