Hurricane Beryl pummels Grenada, races toward Jamaica

Category 5 hurricane leaves widespread damage

St. George's, Grenada - Hurricane Beryl, a powerful Category 5 storm, has battered the island of Grenada, leaving widespread damage in its wake. Officials said the hurricane caused significant damage to buildings, infrastructure, and vegetation.

Hurricane Beryl made landfall on Monday on the island of Carriacou, part of the Grenadine archipelago. The storm intensified rapidly after making landfall, becoming a Category 5 hurricane within hours. It is the first Category 5 Atlantic hurricane on record to form before July 1st.

Beryl is now churning toward Jamaica, where it is expected to make landfall late Thursday. The storm is forecast to remain a hurricane as it approaches the Yucatán Peninsula and Belize.

In Grenada, officials are still assessing the damage caused by the storm. The island's Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Mitchell, said that the damage is "significant" and that the island will need international assistance to recover.

The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) has deployed a team to Grenada to assist with the relief effort. The team will be providing food, water, shelter, and other essential supplies to those affected by the storm.
